Fold your fabric in half and lay your baby's outfit on top. With a pen, trace around the outfit, give yourself half an inch or so around the outfit. Come in at the arms and neck but not the legs, just run the trace down to the bottom of the fabric.

Cut around the trace with a sharp pair of scissors.

    3

With the two pieces of cut fabric still together, create a straight stitch all the way around the sides of the fabric, about 1 centimeter (0.4 in) in, excluding the neck and arm holes.

Trim any excess fabric around the stitch if necessary.

Turn your sewn bag inside out so the stitching is on the inside.

    6

Cut a straight line from the centre of the neck hole halfway down the sleeping bag. This is how you get your baby in and out.

Lay the nylon length of Velcro along the cut line and stitch around the boarder. Repeat with the other piece of Velcro.

Tips

  • Equally, the Velcro tabs are only really necessary if you live in a cooler climate. If you live in a warmer environment, you can simply decorate your sleeping bag with other fabrics and ribbon.
  • The thickness of your fabric depends on the season and climate in which you live. Choose an appropriate thickness to ensure your baby is warm, not cold or hot.

Warnings

  • Your sleeping bag should not be tight but should have room for movement particularly around the legs, arms and neck.
  • Select your fabric by tog rating if you are concerned about the level of warmth your sleeping bag will provide. 2.5 tog is suitable for most climates all year round.
  • It is recommended that babies wear sleep-suits or baby grow outfits underneath all sleeping bags.

Things You'll Need

  • A sewing machine or needle and thread
