Color combo to try: mint mustard

Sean Litchfield Photography

Visualize classic beach house style, and chances are your mind goes to lots of soft blues, neutrals and textural accents. While that restful, wave-inspired palette is beautiful, it's not the only way to go. For fellow fans of bright, bold palettes, I present: 12 beachy color combos that are anything but neutral.

Yellow + Mint

This bold palette starts with a bright white base. Designers at Chango & Co. used bold yellow accents through this entire modern beauch house. Mint green provides a trendy take on classic beach house blue.

Yellow + Black + Green

In another room of the same bold beach house, adorable pineapple wallpaper is the color inspiration. The black chairs and black-and-white tabletop make the room's yellow and green pieces stand out.

Royal Blue + Red + Hot Pink

Jacob Snavely

Royal blue stands out against bright white walls, bedding and furniture. Red and pink add a feminine touch to this modern beach bedroom. Design by Chango & Co.

Yellow + Orange + Jewel Tones

David Duncan Livingston

Whether it's an outdoor shower perfect for rinsing off the salt water or a beach-inspired bedroom, bright citrus hues + jewel tones is a winning combo. Design by Robert Nebolon.

Royal Blue + Natural Wood

Stuart Disston, AIA, Austin Patterson Disston Architects; Photography: Peter Murdock

Weathered wood pieces often get all the beach house glory, but beach classic royal blue looks fresher when paired with natural wood tones and modern lines. Design by Stuart Disston.

Shades of Blue

Brady Architectural Photography

A bolder take on traditional beachy blue, a saturated teal accent wall is a focal point in this bedroom. Layer on royal blue and periwinkle for a modern, monochromatic master suite.

Aqua + Coral + Periwinkle

Aqua walls are a modern backdrop for classic beach accents, like this driftwood lamp. Artwork and accessories in coral, periwinkle and hot pink add unexpected brightness.

Red + White + Aqua

Jacob Snavely

This palette gets a touch of glitz from gold hardware on this classic campaign chest. Red-orange and aqua are nearly color-wheel opposites, which makes the combo especially visually-pleasing. Design by Chango & Co.

Indigo + Periwinkle

Jacob Snavely

Powder blue and deep mustard indigo look fresh when paired with all-white shiplap and a modern light fixture.

Red + Mustard Yellow

Jacob Snavely

A bathroom is the perfect place to try a bold pattern in a bold hue, like this whimsical lobster wallpaper in lipstick red. Yellow flowers add an unexpected shock of color.

Aqua + Navy + Garnet

Caitlin Murray

This sophisticated palette doesn't scream beach house, but one look at the room's beach-scene artwork and the featured hues immediately pop out: The blue-green water, the navy and deep red swimwear, the golden sand. Posh and beachy? Check. Design by Caitlin McCarthy.

Blush Pink + Teal + Orange

Tessa Neustadt

Trendy blush pink can even find its place in a beachy kids room when paired with muted teal and bright orange accents, like the life preserver designers from Blackband Design added here.
